Lens replacement is often better than laser when lens ageing or presbyopia are the main problems, or when prescriptions sit outside safe laser limits.
Lens‑related reasons
Once the natural lens is losing clarity or flexibility, treating it directly can give more lasting benefit.
- Early or moderate cataracts affecting driving, work, or hobbies
- Established presbyopia where near vision is a major concern
- Desire to avoid future cataract surgery by addressing the lens now
- Hyperopic or mixed prescriptions that respond well to lens correction
- Interest in multifocal, EDOF, or toric lenses to broaden spectacle independence
Corneal and prescription reasons
Sometimes the cornea is not ideal for laser, making internal correction safer.
- Thin or borderline corneas with higher ectasia risk
- Very high myopia or hyperopia exceeding laser safety ranges
- Irregular astigmatism where lens‑based strategies work better alongside other treatments
- Need to preserve the cornea for future procedures
- Shared decision that intraocular risk is justified by broader visual gains
