Is laser eye surgery suitable after PRK?

< 1 min read

Laser enhancement after PRK can be suitable in selected cases, but the cornea has already had tissue removed, so safety margins are tighter.

When an enhancement may be possible

Small residual prescriptions or regression can sometimes be refined once the surface and prescription are stable.

  • Stable vision and refraction for several months
  • Adequate residual corneal thickness on modern scans
  • Regular, healthy corneal shape without signs of ectasia
  • Clear link between remaining prescription and symptoms
  • Realistic expectations about how much extra improvement is likely

When repeat laser is not advised

If further tissue removal would weaken the cornea, other options are safer.

  • Thin or irregular corneas on tomography
  • Evidence of post‑PRK haze, scarring, or early ectasia
  • Significant dry eye or surface disease since the first procedure
  • Alternative strategies such as glasses, contact lenses, or lens surgery
  • Thorough risk-benefit discussion before deciding against more laser
