What is eyelid surgery?

< 1 min read

Eyelid surgery describes operations that improve the function and appearance of the eyelids, helping them protect the eyes properly while also addressing drooping, bags, or abnormal positions.

Common reasons for eyelid surgery

Ageing, muscle weakness, scarring, or nerve problems can cause heavy lids, bags, turning in or out of the lids, or trouble closing the eyes. These changes may affect vision, comfort, and confidence.

  • Blepharoplasty removes extra skin and fat causing hooding or puffiness
  • Ptosis surgery lifts a low lid margin away from the pupil
  • Ectropion and entropion repairs correct lids that turn outwards or inwards
  • Smaller procedures treat chalazia, xanthelasma, or other lid lumps

Planning and recovery

Before surgery, your specialist checks eye health, tear film, and expectations to choose the safest approach. Most operations are day case procedures under local anaesthetic with or without light sedation.

  • Bruising and swelling around the eyes are normal at first and then fade
  • Cold compresses, lubrication, and sleeping propped up improve comfort
  • Clear instructions explain when to resume driving, work, and make up
  • Prompt review is advised if pain, vision change, or redness suddenly increase
