Entropion surgery

< 1 min read

Entropion surgery treats an inward turning eyelid where the lashes rub against the eye, causing pain, watering, and risk of corneal scratches or ulcers.

Why entropion needs treatment

In older adults, loosening of the lid tissues and overactive muscles can roll the eyelid margin inwards. Scarring from previous inflammation or injury can have a similar effect, leaving lashes constantly scraping the eye surface.

  • Symptoms include gritty pain, redness, and light sensitivity
  • Untreated, repeated scratching can lead to infections and scarring
  • Temporary taping, bandage contact lenses, or stitches may be used as a bridge
  • Definitive surgery restores the lid to its proper outward position

What surgery and recovery involve

Under local anaesthetic, the surgeon tightens the lid and rotates the margin so lashes point outwards again. Techniques vary but often include tightening at the outer corner and adjusting muscles or scar tissue.

  • Relief from lash rubbing is usually immediate after surgery
  • Bruising and swelling settle over one to two weeks
  • Eye drops and ointment protect the cornea while the lid heals
  • Contact the clinic if pain, discharge, or recurrent inward turning occurs
