Ectropion

< 1 min read

Ectropion is an outward turning of the eyelid, usually the lower lid, which exposes the inner surface and can cause watering, irritation, and soreness.

Why ectropion occurs

Age related loosening of the supporting tissues is the most common cause, but scarring, facial nerve weakness, or previous surgery can also pull the lid away from the eye. When the lid does not sit snugly against the eye, tears do not spread properly and overflow down the cheek.

  • Symptoms include watering, redness, and gritty discomfort
  • The inner lid surface may look red and thickened
  • Prolonged exposure can lead to infections or corneal damage
  • Lubricating drops and ointment provide short term relief

Treatment and protection

Definitive treatment usually involves surgery to tighten and reposition the lid so it rests correctly against the eye. While waiting for surgery, protecting the eye surface is important.

  • Taping the lid at night and using ointment can improve comfort
  • Surgery is typically day case and tailored to the cause
  • Most patients notice less watering and irritation after repair
  • Urgent review is needed if pain or light sensitivity suddenly worsen
