Ptosis surgery

< 1 min read

Ptosis surgery lifts droopy upper eyelids by tightening or reattaching the muscles that raise the lid, improving both vision and appearance.

How ptosis surgery works

Depending on the cause and severity, the surgeon may shorten the levator muscle through an incision in the skin crease or adjust it from the underside of the lid. In more severe cases, the eyelid can be linked to the forehead muscle with a sling so raising the brow lifts the lid.

  • Often performed under local anaesthetic with sedation
  • Incisions are placed in natural creases to hide scars
  • Both lids may be operated on to keep them balanced
  • Children or complex cases sometimes need general anaesthetic

Recovery and possible adjustments

Swelling and bruising are normal in the first weeks, and lid height may appear slightly high or low while tissues settle. Final position and symmetry continue to refine over several months.

  • Cold compresses and lubricating drops relieve discomfort and dryness
  • Sleeping propped up reduces morning swelling
  • Occasionally a small adjustment procedure is needed to fine tune height
  • Report any severe pain, sudden vision change, or inability to close the eye fully
