YAG laser iridotomy is a clinic procedure that creates a tiny opening in the coloured part of the eye to improve fluid flow and reduce the risk of angle closure glaucoma.
Why this laser is recommended
In some eyes the drainage angle between the iris and cornea is narrow, so fluid struggles to escape and pressure can rise suddenly. A small laser made opening allows fluid to move more freely from behind the iris to the front of the eye.
- Often advised when you have narrow angles or a history of angle closure attacks
- Usually performed with numbing drops at a laser machine
- Both eyes may be treated if they share the same narrow anatomy
- The opening is too small to notice in everyday life
During and after the procedure
You sit at a machine similar to a standard eye examination while the laser delivers brief pulses. Afterwards, pressure is checked and anti inflammatory drops are used for a few days.
- Vision may be slightly blurred and light sensitive for a short time
- Mild discomfort or headache can occur and usually settles quickly
- Regular follow up ensures the opening stays clear and pressure remains safe
- Seek urgent help if you develop severe pain, redness, or sudden vision loss later
