Refractive lens exchange

< 1 min read

Refractive lens exchange is lens replacement surgery carried out mainly to reduce dependence on glasses rather than to treat an established cataract.

Why refractive lens exchange is considered

From mid life onwards, many people find that distance and near prescriptions are both troublesome, and laser eye surgery may not fully address strong or mixed prescriptions.

Replacing the natural lens with a customised intraocular lens can correct short sight, long sight, astigmatism, and presbyopia in a single procedure.

  • Similar technique to modern cataract surgery but offered earlier
  • Removes the future risk of cataract in the treated eye
  • Premium multifocal or extended depth lenses may reduce the need for reading glasses
  • Suitability depends on corneal health, lifestyle, and tolerance of potential halos or glare

What happens during and after surgery

The surgeon removes the natural lens through a tiny corneal incision and inserts a folded artificial lens that opens inside the lens capsule.

Most people notice clearer vision within days, with fine tuning over several weeks.

  • Eye drops prevent infection and control inflammation during early healing
  • Driving, work, and exercise are usually resumed gradually as comfort allows
  • Regular reviews check lens position, pressure, and overall eye health
  • As with any intraocular surgery, sudden pain or vision loss needs urgent assessment
