You can usually shower carefully soon after orbital decompression surgery, but you must protect the eyes, nose, and any incisions from direct water and rubbing.
Taking care in the early days
The eyelids, cheek, and sometimes nasal area are delicate and bruised. Gentle washing keeps you comfortable while reducing infection risk.
- Shower with your back to the water and avoid direct spray on the face
- Keep eyes closed and do not rub the eyelids
- Pat the skin around incisions dry with a clean towel
- Avoid very hot showers that may increase bleeding or swelling
- Do not use eye make-up until your surgeon confirms it is safe
Returning to normal washing
As swelling and tenderness settle, you can gradually relax these precautions. Your clinical team will guide timing.
- Normal showering is often possible after about one to two weeks
- Continue to avoid vigorous rubbing of the eyelids for longer
- Keep strong shampoos and facial products away from incisions
- Delay swimming pools and hot tubs until fully cleared
- Contact the clinic if redness, discharge, or pain increase after showering
