You must not drive immediately after orbital decompression surgery, and many people need several weeks before it is safe to return to driving.
Early restrictions and safety
Swelling, bruising, and possible double vision make early driving unsafe. Arrange help with transport while you recover.
- Do not drive until cleared by your surgeon or optometrist
- Expect light sensitivity and discomfort around the eyes and cheeks
- Use sunglasses outdoors to reduce glare
- Report any sudden loss of vision or severe pain urgently
- Follow your eye team’s specific instructions carefully
Assessing readiness to drive
Driving can resume only when vision in both eyes meets legal standards and you feel fully in control.
- Test how stable your vision feels during everyday tasks
- Double vision must be adequately controlled, often with prisms or occlusion
- Start with short daytime journeys on familiar routes
- Avoid night driving until brightness and depth perception feel normal
- Seek further advice if you remain unsure about safety
