Swimming after endoscopic DCR surgery should be avoided for a period because water can irritate the healing tear passage and increase infection risk.
Early restrictions around water
In the first weeks, the new drainage opening and nasal lining are delicate. Keeping the area dry supports safe healing.
- Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, lakes, and the sea initially
- Do not open your eyes under water until fully cleared
- Protect the operated area from splashes during bathing
- Use prescribed drops and nasal sprays as directed
- Contact the clinic if redness, discharge, or pain follow accidental splashing
Returning to swimming safely
Once your surgeon is happy with healing, swimming can be reintroduced gradually with protection.
- Check the recommended waiting time, often several weeks
- Start with short sessions in a clean, well-maintained pool
- Wear well-fitting goggles to keep water away from the eye
- Avoid very hot pools and saunas to reduce bleeding risk
- Seek advice if pain, bleeding, or blurred vision occur after swimming
