Can I drive after YAG vitreolysis?

< 1 min read

Driving after YAG vitreolysis is usually safe once your vision feels clear and comfortable. Most people wait until at least the next day, but timing should be individual.

Immediately after treatment

You should not drive yourself home from the appointment. Dilating drops, bright laser light, and temporary haze can affect judgement and reaction time.

  • Arrange transport with a friend, family member, or taxi.
  • Expect some light sensitivity and blur for several hours.
  • Wear sunglasses when leaving the clinic.
  • Rest your eyes for the remainder of the day if possible.
  • Use any prescribed drops as directed.

Checking readiness to drive

Before driving again, ensure your vision meets legal standards and floaters are not distracting. If unsure, ask your eye specialist for tailored advice.

  • Check that you can read number plates clearly at the required distance.
  • Start with short, familiar daytime journeys.
  • Delay night driving until glare and haloes feel manageable.
  • Seek urgent help if you notice a dark curtain, sudden blur, or many new floaters.
  • Keep up with follow-up visits to monitor retinal health.
