Can I shower after minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS)?

< 1 min read

You can usually take a careful shower the day after MIGS. Avoid getting soap, shampoo, or dirty water into the operated eye while the wounds heal.

First few days in the bathroom

The eye surface is sensitive after surgery, and rubbing can disturb healing. Gentle habits protect comfort and reduce infection risk.

  • Face away from the main shower stream and keep eyes closed.
  • Wash hair cautiously, letting clean water run backwards away from your face.
  • If soap enters the eye, rinse gently with sterile saline or cooled boiled water.
  • Do not rub; instead blot around the eye with a clean towel.
  • Avoid very hot, steamy showers if they make the eye throb.

Returning to normal washing routines

Restrictions usually ease after the first week, depending on your surgeon’s advice. Always follow any personalised instructions you have been given.

  • Gradually return to your usual shower pattern as comfort allows.
  • Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, and saunas until your surgeon confirms safety.
  • Continue prescribed drops after showering as scheduled.
  • Seek review if you notice redness, discharge, or increased pain.
  • Good hygiene supports smooth recovery and long-term eye health.
