Uveitis

< 1 min read

Uveitis is inflammation inside the eye, affecting structures such as the iris, ciliary body, or choroid. It can cause pain, redness, and blurred vision and may lead to permanent damage if untreated.

Causes and symptoms

Uveitis may arise on its own or as part of a wider body illness. Sometimes no clear cause is found.

  • Symptoms include light sensitivity, floaters, and aching eye pain.
  • Vision may become misty or patchy.
  • Autoimmune diseases, infections, and injuries are possible triggers.
  • Blood tests and scans may be needed to look for underlying problems.
  • Uveitis can be acute, recurrent, or chronic.

Treatment and follow-up

Prompt treatment reduces scarring and protects sight. Therapy aims to calm inflammation while minimising side effects.

  • Steroid drops, injections, or tablets are commonly used.
  • Pupil-dilating drops relieve pain from ciliary spasm.
  • Immunosuppressive medicines may be needed for long-term control.
  • Regular checks monitor pressure, cataract, and macular oedema.
  • Report any flare of pain, redness, or blur quickly.
