Low vision describes permanent visual impairment that cannot be fully corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or surgery. Many different eye conditions can lead to low vision.

  • Common causes include macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and inherited retinal disease
  • Visual acuity or field loss criteria vary between countries
  • Emotional and social effects such as loss of confidence or isolation

Support and rehabilitation

Low-vision services help maximise remaining sight and independence.

  • Optical aids such as magnifiers, telescopes, and high-add lenses
  • Electronic solutions including screen magnifiers and text-to-speech devices
  • Orientation and mobility training plus home adaptations
  • Counselling and peer support to address the psychological impact
