A pterygium is a wedge-shaped growth of conjunctiva that extends onto the cornea, often related to UV and environmental exposure. It is sometimes called “surfer’s eye”.
Symptoms and risk factors
Many pterygia are asymptomatic in early stages.
- Visible fleshy growth on the nasal side of the white of the eye
- Irritation, redness, and foreign-body sensation during flares
- More common in people living in sunny, dusty, or windy climates
- Can induce astigmatism or threaten the visual axis if large
Management
Treatment depends on size, symptoms, and cosmetic concern.
- Lubricating and anti-inflammatory drops for mild irritation
- UV protection with wraparound sunglasses and hats
- Surgical excision with conjunctival autograft when vision, comfort, or cosmesis is affected
- Post-operative follow-up to monitor for recurrence
