A pinguecula is a small, yellowish bump on the white of the eye near the cornea, caused by UV-related degeneration of conjunctival tissue. It is usually benign and common in sunny or dusty environments.
Symptoms and triggers
Many pingueculae remain asymptomatic.
- Localised raised area, typically on the nasal side of the eye
- Mild irritation, redness, or dryness during flare-ups
- Linked to sun, wind, and chronic surface irritation
- Distinct from a pterygium, which grows onto the cornea
Management
Treatment is usually conservative.
- Lubricating drops and occasional mild anti-inflammatory drops for irritation
- UV-protective sunglasses and hats to limit progression
- Surgical removal only for persistent discomfort or cosmetic reasons
- Regular eye checks if appearance changes significantly
