Blepharitis is inflammation of the eyelid margins that often causes burning, grittiness, and crusting. It commonly co-exists with dry eye and meibomian gland problems.
Symptoms and types
The condition can be anterior, affecting lash roots, or posterior, involving oil glands along the lid margin.
- Red, itchy eyelids with flakes or crusts at the lashes
- Gritty, dry, or sticky eyes, especially on waking
- Frequent styes or chalazia in some people
- Associated rosacea or seborrhoeic dermatitis in many cases
Management
Blepharitis is usually a long-term condition managed rather than cured. Daily routines are the foundation of control.
- Warm compresses and lid cleaning to clear debris and oils
- Lubricating drops to relieve dryness and irritation
- Occasional antibiotic or anti-inflammatory treatments during flares
- Regular review for contact lens wearers or those with recurrent infections
