Internal stye

< 1 min read

An internal stye, or internal hordeolum, is a painful infection of a meibomian gland inside the eyelid. It often appears as a tender red swelling.

Symptoms and triggers

Styes develop when bacteria block and infect an oil gland. People with blepharitis or rosacea are more prone.

  • Localised swelling, redness, and soreness in the lid
  • Feeling of pressure or a lump pointing towards the eye surface
  • Watery eye and light sensitivity in some cases
  • Occasional associated fever or general malaise in severe infections

Treatment and prevention

Most internal styes settle with conservative care. Medical help is needed if pain or swelling is marked.

  • Warm compresses several times a day and gentle lid massage
  • Topical or oral antibiotics for more severe or spreading infections
  • Incision and drainage for persistent or very painful lesions
  • Regular lid hygiene to reduce future styes and meibomian blockages
