An internal stye, or internal hordeolum, is a painful infection of a meibomian gland inside the eyelid. It often appears as a tender red swelling.
Symptoms and triggers
Styes develop when bacteria block and infect an oil gland. People with blepharitis or rosacea are more prone.
- Localised swelling, redness, and soreness in the lid
- Feeling of pressure or a lump pointing towards the eye surface
- Watery eye and light sensitivity in some cases
- Occasional associated fever or general malaise in severe infections
Treatment and prevention
Most internal styes settle with conservative care. Medical help is needed if pain or swelling is marked.
- Warm compresses several times a day and gentle lid massage
- Topical or oral antibiotics for more severe or spreading infections
- Incision and drainage for persistent or very painful lesions
- Regular lid hygiene to reduce future styes and meibomian blockages
