Cataract surgery is usually not painful. Anaesthetic drops and sometimes a small injection keep the eye numb, so you feel only pressure and cool water sensations.
During surgery
You are awake but comfortable, seeing lights and movement rather than instruments. The ultrasound that breaks up the lens is not felt as pain.
- Any discomfort is reported immediately so more anaesthetic can be given
- Sedation is available in many centres if you feel anxious
- The procedure often takes less than half an hour
- Most patients describe it as strange, not painful
After the operation
Once anaesthetic wears off, mild ache, grittiness, or light sensitivity is common. These symptoms usually settle within a day or two.
- Paracetamol or similar tablets control discomfort well
- Severe pain is rare and needs urgent review
- Using prescribed drops reduces inflammation and improves comfort
- Most people are surprised by how little pain they experience
