Is conjunctival naevus removal surgery painful?

< 1 min read

Conjunctival naevus removal is usually carried out under local anaesthetic. The eye surface is numbed so you should not feel sharp pain, though some pressure or awareness is normal.

During the procedure

Numbing drops and sometimes a small injection make the conjunctiva insensitive. You remain awake but comfortable.

  • Brief stinging may occur as anaesthetic is injected
  • Lights and movement are visible but painless
  • The naevus is carefully excised and the area smoothed or covered
  • Any discomfort is treated immediately with extra anaesthetic

After surgery

The eye may feel scratchy, watery, and light-sensitive for a few days. These sensations gradually settle.

  • Lubricating and antibiotic drops support healing and comfort
  • Pain is usually controlled with standard tablet medication
  • Severe pain, worsening redness, or vision loss needs urgent review
  • Pathology results are discussed later to confirm the diagnosis
