YAG vitreolysis for floaters is generally only mildly uncomfortable. Numbing drops and a contact lens are used to keep the eye comfortable.
During the procedure
You sit at a laser machine similar to a routine eye exam. The laser targets floaters in the vitreous gel.
- Most people feel no pain, just see bright flashes of light
- Some notice slight warmth or a soft tapping sensation
- The procedure usually lasts 15-30 minutes depending on floater size
- Anxiety often settles after the first few laser pulses
After the laser
Eyes may feel slightly tired or gritty for a short time. Strong pain is unusual and should be checked.
- Temporary increase in small floaters can occur as debris disperses
- Simple pain relief is usually enough if any ache develops
- Urgent review is needed for sudden pain, flashes, or a curtain over vision
- Follow-up visits assess both comfort and improvement in symptoms
