Is YAG vitreolysis painful?

< 1 min read

YAG vitreolysis for floaters is generally only mildly uncomfortable. Numbing drops and a contact lens are used to keep the eye comfortable.

During the procedure

You sit at a laser machine similar to a routine eye exam. The laser targets floaters in the vitreous gel.

  • Most people feel no pain, just see bright flashes of light
  • Some notice slight warmth or a soft tapping sensation
  • The procedure usually lasts 15-30 minutes depending on floater size
  • Anxiety often settles after the first few laser pulses

After the laser

Eyes may feel slightly tired or gritty for a short time. Strong pain is unusual and should be checked.

  • Temporary increase in small floaters can occur as debris disperses
  • Simple pain relief is usually enough if any ache develops
  • Urgent review is needed for sudden pain, flashes, or a curtain over vision
  • Follow-up visits assess both comfort and improvement in symptoms
