What are the complications of eyelid malpositions?

< 1 min read

Eyelid malpositions such as drooping, turning in, or turning out can cause more than just cosmetic concerns. They may affect eye comfort, surface health, and in some cases vision.

Effects on the eye surface

When the lids do not meet or move properly, the tear film becomes unstable. This can leave the cornea exposed or rubbed by lashes.

  • Dry, gritty, or watery eyes from poor tear spread or drainage
  • Redness and irritation where the lid or lashes rub the surface
  • Recurrent infections, crusting, or discharge along the lid margin
  • Surface scratches or ulcers that may become painful

Vision and long-term risks

Untreated malpositions can gradually damage the cornea. Over time this may affect sight and require more complex treatment.

  • Blurred or fluctuating vision if the cornea becomes scarred or irregular
  • Sensitivity to wind and light, making outdoor activities uncomfortable
  • Risk of permanent scarring or thinning in severe, long-standing cases
  • Eye strain or fatigue from constantly trying to blink or hold lids correctly
