What are the symptoms of thyroid eye disease?

< 1 min read

Thyroid eye disease symptoms affect both comfort and appearance. They can range from mild grittiness to significant bulging and double vision.

Early eye and eyelid changes

Inflammation makes tissues around the eye swollen and tight. This can cause several noticeable symptoms.

  • Red, watery, or gritty eyes that feel like they have sand in them
  • Eyelid retraction, giving a wide-eyed or staring look
  • Swelling around the lids and puffy bags, especially in the morning
  • Sensitivity to wind, smoke, and bright light

More serious symptoms

As the condition progresses, muscles and fat behind the eye can enlarge. This may affect vision and eye safety.

  • Bulging eyes with difficulty closing the lids fully
  • Double vision, particularly when looking up or to the side
  • Pain or discomfort when moving the eyes
  • Urgent review if colours fade, central vision blurs, or you notice dimming
