Corneal cross linking helps strengthen a weakened cornea but recovery can feel slow and uncomfortable at first. Knowing the usual timeline makes the process less worrying.
What is it
Corneal cross linking uses vitamin B2 drops and ultraviolet light to stiffen the corneal collagen. It is mainly used for conditions such as keratoconus where the cornea becomes thinner and more cone shaped.
The surface layer of the cornea may be removed before treatment then regrows. This healing stage explains much of the early discomfort.
First week after treatment
In the first few days the eye often feels sore gritty and very light sensitive. A bandage contact lens usually protects the healing surface.
- Blurry or hazy vision that gradually improves
- Tearing and mild swelling of the eyelids
- Use of antibiotic and anti inflammatory drops
