When can I wear makeup after eyelid surgery?

< 1 min read

Makeup use after eyelid surgery must be delayed until incisions have healed to reduce infection risk and avoid irritation from cosmetic particles.

Early Restrictions

Eye-area products are avoided at first.

  • Most surgeons recommend no eye make‑up, including mascara, eyeliner, and eye shadow, for at least 1-2 weeks or until stitches are removed and wounds are sealed.
  • Face make‑up away from the surgical area may be allowed sooner; follow personalised advice.
  • Avoid rubbing or stretching the eyelids while cleansing.
  • Use only prescribed ointments or drops around the incisions during this period.

Resuming Make-Up Safely

Hygiene is key when reintroducing cosmetics.

  • When cleared to restart, choose fresh or thoroughly cleaned products and applicators to minimise bacterial contamination.
  • Apply make‑up gently, keeping products away from the incision line initially.
  • Avoid heavy or waterproof formulations that require vigorous rubbing to remove.
  • Stop using any product that causes redness, itching, or soreness and seek advice if symptoms persist.
