Return to work after cataract surgery

< 1 min read

Many people return to normal routines quite quickly after cataract surgery, but timing depends on your job and how your eye is healing. Comfort, vision clarity, and safety‑critical tasks all need to be considered.

Desk-Based and Light Duties

Less physical roles often allow an early return.

  • Some patients feel ready for office or computer work within a few days, once vision is comfortable.
  • Use frequent breaks and lubricating drops to manage temporary dryness and glare.
  • Check that your vision meets any specific standards if your role involves screen‑intensive or detailed work.
  • Discuss any persistent blur or imbalance with your surgeon before returning full‑time.

Physical and Safety-Critical Work

More strenuous or high‑risk jobs may need a longer break.

  • Roles involving heavy lifting, dusty environments, or risk of eye injury may require one to two weeks off or more, depending on advice.
  • If driving, operating machinery, or working at heights is essential, ensure your surgeon confirms that vision is adequate and stable.
  • Use protective eyewear where appropriate when you first go back.
  • Prioritise eye safety and comfort rather than rushing your return.
