Swimming after PRK requires particular caution because the unhealed corneal surface is vulnerable to infection and irritation. Water activities are therefore delayed longer than after LASIK.
Initial Avoidance
The surface must first re‑epithelialise fully.
- Pools, hot tubs, lakes, and the sea are usually off‑limits for at least 3-4 weeks, or until your surgeon confirms healing.
- Even during showers or baths, try to keep water and soap away from your eyes.
- Do not wear contact lenses for swimming during this period unless explicitly advised.
- Continue your prescribed drops to support surface recovery.
Gradual Return
Protection remains important once swimming resumes.
- Start with short, gentle pool sessions wearing snug swimming goggles.
- Open‑water and high‑impact water sports should be delayed further and always undertaken with eye protection.
- Avoid rubbing your eyes after leaving the water; use artificial tears instead if they feel irritated.
- Seek urgent assessment if you notice pain, redness, discharge, or rapid vision change after swimming.
