What causes blurred near vision?

< 1 min read

Blurred near vision makes reading or close work difficult. It is very common and most often related to presbyopia or uncorrected hyperopia.

Likely Explanations

From the mid‑forties onwards, presbyopia reduces the eye’s ability to focus up close, so small print becomes harder to see. Long-sightedness, inaccurate prescriptions, dry eye, and some medications can also blur near tasks at any age.

  • People may hold material further away or need more light to read
  • Children with hidden hyperopia may tire quickly when working at near
  • After eye surgery, temporary focusing changes can affect near clarity
  • Systemic conditions like diabetes can cause variable near blur through lens swelling

Assessment and Care

Refraction, focusing tests, and examination of the ocular surface usually identify treatable causes. Solutions include reading glasses, multifocals, contact lenses, lubricants, or managing underlying disease.

  • Do not ignore rapid-onset near blur with other symptoms, which needs urgent review
  • Task-specific lenses can optimise distance for work or hobbies
  • Regular eye examinations monitor progression of presbyopia or other conditions
  • Healthy lighting and posture reduce additional strain
