What are reading glasses?

< 1 min read

Reading glasses are lenses designed specifically to improve near vision affected by presbyopia. They provide extra focusing power for tasks such as reading, sewing, and using handheld devices.

Types

Single-vision reading spectacles give clear vision at one chosen near distance, while some people use different pairs for varied tasks. Ready-made readers offer standard strengths, whereas prescription glasses are customised.

  • Prescription reading glasses correct astigmatism and unequal eyes
  • Ready-made options may be suitable for occasional use with simple needs
  • Lens strength is based on age, working distance, and underlying prescription
  • Anti-reflective coatings can improve comfort in artificial lighting

Use and Care

Reading glasses are typically worn only for near tasks and removed for distance. Regular checks ensure the prescription remains appropriate as presbyopia progresses.

  • Keep spectacles clean and store them in a case when not in use
  • Replacing scratched or poorly fitting frames improves clarity and comfort
  • Inform your optometrist about work and hobbies to tailor the design
  • Do not share reading glasses, as prescriptions are individual
