Retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) imaging measures the thickness of the nerve fibre layer around the optic disc, usually using OCT. It detects structural loss of ganglion cell axons in glaucoma and other optic neuropathies.
Scan interpretation
The device compares measured thickness to a reference database and displays deviations on colour-coded maps. Progressive thinning on sequential scans can indicate ongoing damage even before visual field defects appear.
- Especially helpful in early or pre-perimetric glaucoma
- Good scan quality and consistent positioning are essential
- Findings must be interpreted alongside optic disc appearance
- Non-glaucomatous optic neuropathies can also alter RNFL patterns
