What is keratoconus?

< 1 min read

Keratoconus is a progressive thinning and cone-shaped bulging of the cornea that can cause irregular astigmatism and blurred vision. It often begins in adolescence or early adulthood and may progress at different rates in each eye.

Typical features

People may notice increasing short-sightedness, ghosted images or frequent changes in spectacle prescription. Advanced cases can develop scarring or sudden swelling if the cornea cracks and fluid enters the tissue.

  • Often affects both eyes but to different degrees
  • Associated with eye rubbing and some atopic conditions
  • Can run in families, so relatives may benefit from screening
  • Early diagnosis allows consideration of corneal cross-linking to slow change

Keratoconus management, including cross-linking and contact lens fitting, is provided within corneal and laser eye surgery services at Blue Fin Vision®. The blog what is keratoconus? explains symptoms, diagnosis and treatment options in more detail.
