Chalazion removal is a minor procedure to drain a persistent eyelid cyst that has not settled with warm compresses and drops. A chalazion forms when an oil gland in the lid becomes blocked.
How chalazion removal works
After numbing the eyelid with local anaesthetic, a small incision is made on the inside of the lid and the contents of the cyst are gently scraped out. A short course of ointment is used afterwards.
- Usually takes only a few minutes in the clinic
- Scarring on the skin surface is minimal because the cut is often hidden inside the lid
- Recurrence is possible if the glands block again
