Lattice corneal dystrophy is an inherited disorder where abnormal amyloid deposits form in the corneal stroma. These deposits create branching, lattice-like lines that can affect transparency.
Features
Patients may develop recurrent episodes of pain from epithelial erosions, along with gradual blurring of vision. The age of onset and severity vary between families and subtypes.
- Usually affects both eyes
- Can cause irregular astigmatism
- May require repeated treatment for erosions
Treatment
Management includes lubrication, treatment of recurrent erosions, and sometimes corneal transplantation when scarring becomes visually significant. Care is often coordinated through corneal or general ophthalmology clinics.
