Presbyopia is the age-related loss of the eye’s ability to focus on near objects. It occurs as the natural lens becomes stiffer and less able to change shape.
Symptoms
People notice difficulty reading small print, holding material further away, and needing more light for close tasks. Existing glasses wearers may find they need an extra prescription for near work.
- Typically begins in the mid-40s and progresses gradually
- Affects people regardless of previous refractive error
- Can coexist with myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism
Management Options
Common solutions include reading glasses, bifocals, varifocals, and multifocal contact lenses. Advanced treatments such as PresbyMAX, PRESBYOND, or lens replacement are also available; these are discussed in Blue Fin Vision® blogs on what is presbyopia? and laser eye treatment for presbyopia.
Long-Term Outlook
Presbyopia is a normal part of ageing rather than a disease, but tailored correction can keep near tasks comfortable and efficient.
