What is allergic conjunctivitis?

< 1 min read

Allergic conjunctivitis is inflammation of the conjunctiva triggered by allergens such as pollen, animal dander, or dust mites. It is often associated with hay fever or other atopic conditions.

Symptoms

Intense itch, watering, redness, and swelling of the lids are typical. Both eyes are usually affected, and symptoms may be seasonal or perennial depending on the allergen.

  • Stringy, clear mucus may be present
  • Rubbing the eyes can worsen inflammation and risk keratoconus progression
  • Vision is usually normal once tearing and mucus are cleared

Treatment

Management includes allergen avoidance where possible, lubricants, cold compresses, and antihistamine or mast?cell stabiliser drops. Short courses of topical steroids may be needed in more severe cases under specialist guidance.
