Treatment options for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) depend on whether the disease is dry or wet. While dry AMD currently has no cure, several measures can slow progression, and wet AMD can often be treated effectively with injections.
Treating Wet AMD
The mainstay is intravitreal anti-VEGF injections that block abnormal blood vessel growth and leakage. Treatment is usually given as a course of injections with regular monitoring by OCT and vision tests.
- Early treatment offers the best chance of preserving reading vision
- Injection intervals may lengthen over time if the disease is stable
- Some cases may need long-term maintenance therapy
Managing Dry AMD
For dry AMD, lifestyle modification, smoking cessation, and sometimes AREDS-based nutritional supplements are recommended. Low-vision aids, good lighting, and support services help maximise remaining sight.
