Can keratoconus be treated?

< 1 min read

Keratoconus can be treated and managed effectively in most patients, although the approach depends on the stage and rate of progression. The main goals are to stabilise the cornea and provide the best possible vision.

Vision Correction Options

In early disease, glasses or soft contact lenses may provide adequate vision. As the cornea becomes more irregular, rigid gas-permeable, hybrid, or scleral lenses often give sharper vision by creating a smooth front surface.

  • Glasses and soft lenses for mild disease
  • Rigid or scleral lenses for more irregular corneas
  • Occasional use of bespoke lens designs for complex cases

Treatments to Slow Progression

Corneal cross-linking is used to strengthen the cornea and reduce the risk of further bulging. In advanced disease with scarring or very thin corneas, partial or full-thickness corneal transplantation may be considered.
