Most people need at least two to three weeks off work after orbital decompression surgery, sometimes longer, depending on recovery and job demands.
Considering your role and symptoms
Bruising, swelling, and tiredness can be significant at first. Double vision, numbness, and discomfort may also limit how quickly you feel ready.
- Desk-based work may be possible after two to three weeks
- Use lubricating drops during screen tasks to ease strain
- Plan shorter days or phased return if possible
- Avoid dusty or crowded environments while bruising and risk of infection remain
- Check that you meet driving standards before commuting by car
Physical and safety-critical jobs
Roles involving heavy lifting, heights, or safety-sensitive tasks may need a longer break. Clear, comfortable vision is essential.
- Discuss your duties with the surgical team before and after surgery
- Delay strenuous work and contact activities until your surgeon is satisfied
- Use protective eyewear if there is a risk of facial impact
- Stop work and seek help if pain, swelling, or double vision suddenly worsen
- Agree a personalised return-to-work plan at follow-up
