What is macular oedema?

< 1 min read

Macular oedema is a build-up of fluid in the central retina that causes the macula to thicken and swell. It can result from diabetes, vein occlusions, inflammation or post-surgical changes.

Symptoms and diagnosis

Typical symptoms are blurred or wavy central vision and difficulties with reading and fine detail. OCT scanning is used to confirm the presence and severity of swelling.

  • Different underlying causes require different treatment strategies
  • Options include eye drops, intravitreal injections and laser
  • Controlling systemic risk factors such as diabetes and blood pressure is important
  • Regular follow-up helps guide the timing of repeat treatments
