Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions in which the optic nerve is damaged, often in association with raised eye pressure. Without treatment it can lead to gradual, irreversible loss of vision.
Types and symptoms
Primary open-angle glaucoma typically causes slow loss of peripheral vision with no early symptoms, while angle-closure glaucoma can present suddenly with pain and redness. Many people are diagnosed during routine eye checks before noticing problems themselves.
- Family history and age increase the risk of glaucoma
- Regular pressure checks and optic nerve assessment are important
- Treatment aims to lower eye pressure with drops, laser or surgery
- Vision that is lost cannot usually be regained, so early detection matters
