Wet age-related macular degeneration is a chronic condition where abnormal leaky blood vessels grow under the macula. Without treatment it can rapidly damage central vision.
Symptoms and diagnosis
Changes often affect one eye first, but both may be involved over time.
- Distortion of straight lines, central blur, or a dark patch when reading
- Colours looking washed out and difficulty recognising faces
- OCT scans and fluorescein angiography confirm fluid and new vessels
- Needs urgent assessment if symptoms appear suddenly
Treatment
Anti-VEGF injections are the main treatment and can stabilise or improve sight in many people.
- Series of intravitreal injections followed by monitoring and top-ups
- Lifestyle measures such as not smoking and maintaining a healthy diet
- Low-vision support if central damage is advanced
- Regular follow-up to detect any recurrence early
