Vitreoretinal Surgery at Blue Fin Vision®
Private Vitreoretinal Care in London, Hertfordshire & Essex
What Is Vitreoretinal Surgery?
Vitreoretinal surgery treats conditions affecting the retina and vitreous gel at the back of the eye. This delicate region is responsible for capturing images and sending them to your brain. Disorders here can threaten sight and often require urgent, specialist care.
Blue Fin Vision® provides consultant-led vitreoretinal assessment and surgery across London, Hertfordshire and Essex. We treat the full spectrum of conditions including retinal detachment, macular holes, epiretinal membranes and vitreous haemorrhage.
While NHS vitreoretinal services treat urgent retinal detachments promptly, routine or semi-urgent cases like epiretinal membrane peeling or macular hole repair can face 18-week waits or longer. Blue Fin Vision® provides faster private access under the same GMC-registered consultant standards, often within weeks.
Our lead consultant has performed over 55,000 eye procedures with complication rates three to five times below UK averages (independently audited through the National Ophthalmology Database).

Do You Need Vitreoretinal Assessment?
Seek prompt assessment if you experience:
- Sudden increase in floaters
- Flashes of light in your vision
- A shadow or curtain across your vision
- Sudden blurred or distorted central vision
- Recent diagnosis of retinal tear or detachment
Some symptoms indicate urgent conditions. If you notice a shadow spreading across your vision or sudden vision loss, seek same-day assessment.
You may also benefit from vitreoretinal consultation if you have:
- Epiretinal membrane affecting your vision
- Macular hole diagnosis
- Vitreous haemorrhage not clearing
- Failed previous retinal surgery elsewhere
- Complex diabetic eye disease
What Happens Next
- Urgent or routine assessment: Your consultant conducts a thorough examination including OCT imaging, ultrasound if needed, and clinical examination
- Diagnosis: We identify the condition, its severity and urgency
- Treatment plan: A tailored surgical or monitoring strategy based on your specific condition
- Surgery (if needed): Performed in UK hospital facilities under local or general anaesthetic
- Postoperative care: Structured follow-up to monitor healing and visual recovery
Surgical Procedures
Vitrectomy (Pars Plana Vitrectomy)
Vitrectomy removes the vitreous gel to access and repair the retina. This procedure is used to treat:
- Retinal detachment
- Macular hole
- Epiretinal membrane
- Vitreous haemorrhage
- Dropped lens fragments
Modern vitrectomy uses small-gauge instruments for faster healing and reduced discomfort.
Retinal Detachment Repair
Retinal detachment requires urgent surgical treatment to prevent permanent vision loss. Techniques include:
- Vitrectomy with gas or silicone oil tamponade
- Scleral buckle surgery
- Pneumatic retinopexy (for selected cases)
Your consultant will recommend the most appropriate approach based on the type and extent of detachment.
Laser Retinopexy and Cryotherapy
For retinal tears without detachment, laser or freezing treatment seals the tear and prevents progression. This is often performed as an outpatient procedure.
Epiretinal Membrane and Macular Hole Surgery
Precision microsurgery peels scar tissue from the macula (ERM) or closes macular holes to restore central vision. These procedures are performed as day cases with local anaesthetic.
What to Expect
Before Surgery
Your consultation includes retinal imaging (OCT, ultrasound if needed) and detailed clinical examination. Your consultant explains the diagnosis, surgical approach and expected outcomes. Formal consent follows RCOphth and GMC guidelines, including discussion of risks such as infection, bleeding or vision changes.
During Surgery
- Performed in UK hospital facilities
- Local anaesthetic (awake but comfortable) or general anaesthetic depending on the procedure
- Duration varies from 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on complexity
- You may have gas or silicone oil placed in the eye to support the retina
After Surgery
- Posturing may be required (face-down positioning) for some procedures – your consultant will explain if this applies
- Eye drops to prevent infection and reduce inflammation
- Follow-up appointments to monitor healing
- Vision typically improves gradually over weeks to months
- If gas was used, you cannot fly until it absorbs (typically 2-8 weeks)
- Direct access to our team for any concerns
