YAG laser procedures are widely used and generally safe, but like all treatments they carry some risks. Understanding these helps you weigh benefits and recognise when to seek help.
Common short-term effects
Mild, short-lived symptoms are frequent and usually settle on their own or with drops. They vary slightly depending on the procedure.
- Temporary blurring, glare, or seeing small specks after capsulotomy or iridotomy
- Light sensitivity and mild discomfort for a day or two
- Short-term pressure rise, so pressure is often checked afterwards
- Need for additional drops to control inflammation
Less common but serious risks
Serious complications are rare but important to understand. Prompt attention improves outcomes if they occur.
- Retinal tears or detachment, particularly after capsulotomy in high-risk eyes
- Lens damage or pitting, which can affect quality of vision
- Persistent high or very low pressure requiring further treatment
- Sudden pain, vision loss, or flashes and floaters needing urgent review
