YAG capsulotomy indications and timing

< 1 min read

YAG capsulotomy is a quick laser procedure used to treat posterior capsular opacification, sometimes called a secondary cataract, after cataract surgery. It is recommended when this clouding genuinely affects everyday vision.

When the laser is needed

Not everyone with a cloudy capsule requires treatment. Decisions consider symptoms, examination findings, and how much tasks are affected.

  • Blurry, misty, or glare-prone vision months or years after surgery
  • Difficulties with reading, night driving, or recognising faces
  • Eye examination confirming clouding on the capsule behind the lens implant
  • No other untreated cause such as macular disease alone explains the changes

Choosing the right timing

The procedure is usually planned, not urgent, giving time to discuss benefits and risks. Many patients notice improvement soon afterwards.

  • Laser is often delayed in very early post-operative periods until the eye is stable
  • People at higher risk of retinal detachment are assessed carefully
  • Once performed, capsulotomy rarely needs repeating in the same eye
  • Follow-up checks monitor pressure and ensure vision improves as expected
