YAG laser vitreolysis is a procedure that uses laser energy to break up disturbing eye floaters. It can be an alternative to vitrectomy for selected patients.
How YAG vitreolysis works
After dilating the pupil and numbing the eye with drops, the ophthalmologist focuses a special YAG laser on the floater. Short laser pulses are used to fragment or dissolve the floater so that it becomes less noticeable.
- Usually performed in the clinic as an outpatient procedure
- Best suited to well-defined floaters away from the retina and lens
- Multiple sessions may sometimes be needed
