What is YAG laser iridotomy?

< 1 min read

YAG laser iridotomy is a procedure that creates a tiny opening in the iris to improve fluid flow within the eye. It is mainly used to prevent or treat angle-closure glaucoma in eyes with narrow drainage angles.

How YAG iridotomy works

With the eye numbed by drops, focused laser pulses create a small channel through the peripheral iris. This allows aqueous fluid to move more freely from behind the iris to the front of the eye, helping to equalise pressure and open the drainage angle.

  • Usually completed in the clinic in a few minutes
  • Both eyes may be treated if they share similar anatomy
  • Temporary light sensitivity or mild discomfort can occur after treatment
