What is Xen Gel Stent?

< 1 min read

The Xen Gel Stent is a soft, tiny tube inserted into the eye to create a new drainage pathway for aqueous fluid, lowering pressure in glaucoma.

How the Xen Gel Stent works

The device is implanted from inside the eye through the sclera into the subconjunctival space. Fluid then drains through the stent to form a controlled bleb under the conjunctiva.

  • Minimally invasive procedure often done under local anaesthetic
  • Used for open-angle glaucoma not adequately controlled with drops
  • Implant is made of a flexible, collagen-derived material
  • Can be combined with cataract surgery or performed alone

Benefits and follow-up

The Xen aims to deliver pressure reductions similar to traditional surgery with a smaller incision. Postoperative care focuses on maintaining a healthy bleb.

  • Needling or additional treatment may be required if the bleb scars
  • Regular monitoring of pressure and bleb appearance is essential
  • Some patients still need drops, though often at reduced levels
  • Suitability depends on glaucoma type, previous surgery, and scarring risk
