What is tarsorrhaphy surgery?

< 1 min read

Tarsorrhaphy is a procedure where part of the eyelids is temporarily or permanently stitched together to narrow the opening and protect the eye surface.

Why tarsorrhaphy is done

When the eyelids cannot close fully, the cornea can dry and ulcerate. Reducing the gap helps maintain moisture and shielding.

  • Used in facial nerve palsy, severe dry eye, or non-healing corneal ulcers
  • Can be partial, usually at the outer or inner corner
  • May be reversible, with stitches later removed or loosened
  • Often combined with lubricants, moisture goggles, or other treatments

Effects on appearance and vision

The narrowed opening can affect field of view and cosmetic appearance. These factors are discussed in advance.

  • Central vision is usually preserved if the middle opening remains
  • Some patients notice reduced peripheral vision on the affected side
  • Cosmetic options and future reversal are planned case by case
  • Main goal is to preserve the cornea and prevent painful damage
