The PreserFlo MicroShunt is a small drainage implant that diverts fluid from the anterior chamber to the subconjunctival space, lowering eye pressure in glaucoma.
How the PreserFlo works
Inserted through a short scleral tunnel, the flexible tube creates a controlled outflow of aqueous humour to form a bleb under the conjunctiva. It acts similarly to a trabeculectomy but with a standardised lumen.
- Made from a biocompatible material designed to minimise scarring
- Used for moderate to advanced open-angle glaucoma
- Often combined with anti-scarring medication such as mitomycin C
- Requires careful surgical technique and postoperative management
Advantages and aftercare
The MicroShunt aims to provide predictable flow and fewer complications than some traditional surgeries. However, bleb-related issues can still occur.
- May achieve low target pressures needed in advanced disease
- Needling or revision may be required if scarring develops
- Patients must attend regular follow-up visits for bleb checks
- Decision to use PreserFlo depends on previous surgery and risk profile
